Charles Heath is known to have made 18 of the earliest pen lithographs, or polyautographs (as they were first known); some of these were after designs by R.L. West and J.H. Mortimer, and a few were of his own design - all of these pen lithographs are rare today.

In his later years Charles Heath became known primarily as a reproductive line engraver, producing a wide variety of small book illustrations, in particular for the Annuals which became popular during the 1820's. In 1827 Heath started his own annual, The Keepsake, which enjoyed considerable popular and commercial success.
